Life in the trenches

Life in the trenches is about the mixture of forces in ones life. In my case it's family, work, and RPGs.

Something stinks here..

Ok, get this.. our friends over at Google have invaded the bathrooms of the world!  Now I'm not going to say if this is a good idea or a bad idea but I will say that I have ebooks on my Blackberry for such private times.  I suspect there are a lot of people out there that use those few precious moments during the day to escape and stop thinking about what they have going on at their desk.

I do know that I'll at least keep any eye on the main blog posts, there could be some interesting info there but it's staying on my screen for now.

Go away ice!

Well it turned out to be three long days filled with winter weather.  Of course being a southern town any bit of ice shuts this place down pretty fast.  It is surprising actually since I lived in show country for a few short years and things didn't generally shut down like they do here.  I did enjoy seeing the snow fall though, you have to make sure and catch it right away here since if you blink you might miss it and it often doesn't stick.  The worst part about this ice storm was the ice melting off the roof of the house.  We had about an inch thick piece that decided if wanted to melt itself into the inside of the roof and come inside the wall.  Needless to say I decided it would be best to knock off as much of the ice in that area.

Driving in today was a lot of fun.  There were fewer cars on the road and they were in pretty good condition when I was on them.  The only problem was having to take a different route since the toll roads were shut down.  All in all it was a pretty smooth ride and I expect the toll roads will be open with I leave today.

I did run into an interesting application that I might poke at.  The Beer House is a sample CMS/Ecomm website that came from a book; it is a sample application and hits a lot of the newer things that are in .Net 2.0.  While I used to use Dot Net Nuke for the type of web site these are good at I think that this new one might be a better starting point.  The main thing I'm looking for is something that can be modified easily and that doesn't change that often, or ever in this case.  In my case each one would be a new deployment with some custom code to add in any features that might be needed.  I expect I'll know more when I get a chance to look at it in more depth.

Massive storage on the way

I've been following this news for a few weeks now; I'm not sure what the actual time frame is but both Hitachi and Seagate are set to release 1terabyte hard drives this year.  While that's good news in and of itself; the best part is that there will be a form factor for notebooks.

My notebook has two drive bays.. two terabytes.. oh my!
